Whole School Engagement

Whole School Engagement activities positively impact school climate by including groups of students, teachers, staff, administrators. An inclusive school climate that fosters understanding and respect for all can influence how students think and act within and beyond the school. School-wide opportunities focused on social inclusion raise awareness and create an educational environment where respect and acceptance are the norm, and all students feel included and engaged. This welcoming community cultivates a positive school climate and enhances other school-wide efforts.

Whole school activities also offer a platform to demonstrate the power of young people to positively impact their school community by promoting social inclusion.

Examples of WHE activities:

  • Unified Sports Day
  • Fans in the Stands
  • School Campaigns
  • Classroom Lessons
  • Spread the Word Campaign

Spread the Word Campaign

Spread the Word is an awareness campaign, part of Special Olympics’ wider outreach, which features competitions and outreach activities for schools to participate in. It provides a collective platform for whole school engagement and increases participation in inclusive and unified activities within schools. Students can sign pledges to be more inclusive and encourage peers to do the same.

The UAE Government has achieved tremendous progress in the integration of People of Determination in the community and it is now up to all stakeholders to ensure their meaningful and sustainable inclusion by changing mindsets and shifting attitudes. Special Olympics UAE is starting with schools as they represent the cornerstone in our community.

The campaign runs from January 2022 until March 2022 and schools can mark Inclusion Day which takes place the first Wednesday of March.

Campaign activities for whole school engagement can include simple activities that do not create additional workload for teachers; such as asking the younger children to list 3 key actions that promote inclusion in school, using resources supplies by the campaign, and pinning the students’ sheets on the classroom walls, and amplifying the impact of such activities through sharing.
